So this is where my journey began with SEND QUEST.............
Through necessity, I had to home educate our daughter however I found that there wasn't enough out there for SEND. If I did find something there wasn't the level of structure wanted, knowledge or balance of activities that would allow for autonomy and the development of social skills as well as the learning that I wanted for our daughter.
Whilst home education doesn't have to be implemented in the same way as traditional schooling, it is down to individual preference. I personally feel that there still needs to be an element of structure. Children rely on this to learn to navigate their day and manage their time amongst many other skills. From there with guidance and consistency, they learn a level of independence. This includes those with special educational needs and disabilities.
Our daughter wanted a t-shirt specifically for the club because she wanted everyone to feel the same. In her words......
"If we wear a special t-shirt for our club, then no one will feel left out. We're all the same at the end of the day. We all want friends and people we can trust, who treat you well and don't disappear". (Isla, age 10)
I wanted a group that allowed the children to make friends in their own unique way and be supported by parents or carers to actively foster those friendships, for the children to feel comfortable enough to make mistakes without pressures or expectations placed upon them. To indulge their imaginations and have the opportunity to explore new things. Ultimately, I would love for them to understand and enjoy the sense of achievement and pride that
all SEND children are capable of.
So SEND QUEST came about!
